Surveyors of the Map

I wanted to share the last bit of information that is a part of the history of the 1816 general survey plat map that I found. A number of years ago, our former chief surveyor here at the Lucas County Engineer’s Office managed to obtain scanned images of the General Land Office Survey Notes of the Twelve Mile Square at the Maumee Rapids, Two Mile Square at Lower Sandusky, the Town of Perrysburg on Maumee River and the Town of Croghanville on Sandusky River, OHIO, Vol. 18. These were obtained from the Ohio History Connection. These field notes, specifically the Twelve Mile Square surveys, are the surveyed tracts that are on the 1816 map.

Here is the list of the Surveyor Generals and Surveyors mentioned in the survey notes that are connected to the map:

Edward Tiffin – 4th Surveyor General of the Northwest Territory, 1st Commissioner of the General Land Office, 8th Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, US Senator from Ohio, 1st Governor of Ohio and 1st Speaker of the Northwest Territory House of Representatives

Samuel Carpenter – Deputy Surveyor of the General Land Office

Joseph Wampler – Deputy Surveyor of the General Land Office, performed the re-survey of the Twelve Mile Square in 1816

Jared Mansfield – 2nd Surveyor General of the Northwest Territory

Elias Glover – Deputy Surveyor of the General Land Office, performed the original 1805 survey of the Twelve Mile Square

Samuel Williams – Chief Clerk in the Office of the Surveyor General of the Northwest Territory

William Brookfield – Deputy Surveyor of the General Land Office

Here are the Survey Notes, which include the surveys of the Private Claims tracts that are written on the map and the pre-emption tract of Amos Spafford:

I am so glad to be able to provide this additional information that adds to the ever increasing history of what we here at the office now call “The Map”!

Merry Christmas!
