There are times that I receive email notifications with links to new or updated online information regarding GIS, survey, orthographic and mapping websites. I just received an email for the first link listed below and I decided to bring forward a list of the best historical mapping websites that I have used in the past that are offered for anyone interested that may be looking for different kinds of information, such as a year a county was created or ancestors being annotated on a map. Have fun looking through these:
History of US Counties – Animated Map
Historical U.S. Counties Auto-Checker
AAG – Historical GIS Clearinghouse & Forum
US Census Bureau State Based County Outline Maps
UCLA Library – Maps, Atlases, Aerial Images, and Cartographic Resources
Library of Congress Online Maps
Sanborn Maps – Library of Congress
The following link is one I found through a Miller researcher that helped me locate the property of an ancestor, Jacob Miller (1697-1772) in Jefferson Township, Berks County, PA. Be aware that not all townships are available:
Pennsylvania State Archives – Records of the Land Office – WARRANTEE TOWNSHIP MAPS
David Rumsey Historical Map Collection
The History of America’s Maps – All in One App
Featured Image:
The United States of America – Laid down from the best authorities – John Wallis – Published April 3, 1783 – Courtesy of the Library of Congress
This is wonderful news thank you I can’t wait to start my research with this information. Linda Henrie

Linda,
It’s always my pleasure to share the tools I use to find ancestors. I’m so glad to be able to help anyone do the same. Good hunting!

Brian,
Thanks for sharing this resource! I have just begun using maps in my research and have been somewhat frustrated with what I have found – and not found. I’m looking forward to checking out some of these links.

Karen,
So glad to be able to bring these links to the forefront. It can be very frustrating when you have no other resources or avenues of research, and uncovering resources that can help you discover new things about your ancestors is what it’s all about.
